ABOUT
Dr Riyaad Moydien is a specialist vascular and endovascular surgeon interested in preventing, diagnosing, and managing vascular diseases affecting arteries and veins in the neck, chest, abdomen and limbs. He completed his MBChB at the University of Cape Town in 2006 and completed his internship training at Kalafong Hospital. Dr Moydien worked as a Community Service Medical Officer at Elsies River Community Hospital and Khayelitsha District Hospital. In 2011, he completed his registrar training in General Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital and completed a Master of Medicine in Surgery from the University of Cape Town medical school. Dr Moydien qualified as a Specialist General Surgeon and worked as a Consultant General Surgeon and Trauma Surgeon in the Trauma Unit of Groote Schuur Hospital. He super-specialised in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and completed his fellowship at Groote Schuur Hospital in 2018. He received a certificate in the Sub-Speciality of Vascular Surgery of the College of Surgeons of South Africa. Dr Moydien is available for consultation at Melomed Tokai and Melomed Belville.

- Peripheral Arterial Disease
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common circulatory problem or vascular disease. Atherosclerosis, which results in the hardening or the narrowing of the arteries, is one of the most common diseases that affect the arteries. Neck, heart, upper and lower limb arteries are the most affected arteries. Stroke, chest pain, heart attacks, and poor blood flow to the legs and feet can result from untreated narrowing of the arteries. Dr Moydien will treat peripheral arterial disease with either medical or surgical options. Surgical treatment includes open surgery and minimally invasive endovascular surgery. - Aneurysms
An aneurysm is the enlargement, dilatation or bulging of an artery caused by weakness in the arterial wall that most affect the aorta but can affect peripheral arteries in the legs. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) that occurs in the part of the aorta that runs through the abdomen is the most common aneurysm that Dr Moydien sees. Aneurysms typically enlarge and eventually rupture, which is life-threatening. Treatment for aneurysms is individualised. Medical treatment involves managing cardiovascular and aneurysm risk factors and closely monitoring an aneurysm. Aneurysm repair can include open surgery and less invasive endovascular repair. - Diabetic Foot
Diabetic foot problems are one of the most common complications of diabetes that is poorly controlled. Uncontrolled high blood sugar results in damaged nerves (diabetic peripheral neuropathy) and the circulation to the feet (diabetic peripheral arterial disease). Diabetic peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease mean an absence and altered sensation, together with poor blood flow to the foot. Sores or ulcers on feet that fail to heal can be a resultant. These infected foot injuries can spread infection rapidly to involve the bone or, more extensively, the foot and leg. Gangrene and amputation can result from diabetic foot problems. Urgent treatment of infections and blood supply restoration to the foot can be limb-saving. Treatment involves optimising diabetes and surgical treatment. - Carotid Artery Disease and Stroke
The build-up of plaque deposits causes carotid artery disease in the carotid arteries, the main arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. When an excess of plaque builds up in these arteries, the artery can constrict and narrow, resulting in carotid stenosis. Small clots can break from the plaque and travel to the brain, temporarily interrupting blood supply to the brain, which is a stroke. A stroke can be major or minor and can lead to temporary or permanent disability and even death. Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is a temporary disability due to carotid artery disease. Treatment can include open surgery and endovascular surgery. - Venous Disease
Venous disorders affect the veins, which are responsible for carrying blood from the legs back to the heart. Blood clots in the deep veins (deep vein thrombosis), blood clots in the superficial veins (superficial vein thrombosis or thrombophlebitis), and chronic venous insufficiency results in spider veins, varicose veins, leg swelling, and chronic venous leg ulceration, are venous diseases. Dr Moydien has expertise in diagnosing and treating various venous diseases. - Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) results from blood clots that form in the deep veins in the legs and occasionally in the arms. DVT can lead to early or late complications such as pulmonary embolism. DVT may also dissolve, leaving behind a damaged vein. Deep vein thrombosis is a serious and life-threatening disease that requires intervention by a vascular surgeon. Treatment includes medication or endovascular treatment. - Varicose Veins & Spider Veins
Varicose veins are blue or purple spidery veins raised from the skin and can be seen through it. Spider veins are fine blue lines seen flat on the surface of the skin. These are both caused by weakness in the blood vessel wall. These veins are commonly found on the legs. Varicose veins may be a cosmetic problem, but leg swelling, skin pigmentation, and leg ulceration with risk of superficial vein thrombosis may occur if left untreated. Treatment could include endovenous laser therapy, endovenous radiofrequency therapy, sclerotherapy, and traditional open surgery. - Cardiovascular Risk Assessment
Dr Moydien can assist in cardiovascular risk assessments, screen for cardiovascular disease and aid high-risk profiles. Helping make health and lifestyle changes necessary to avoid having a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke is essential. Patients older than 60 years old and younger patients with any cardiovascular risk factors need a risk assessment. - Vascular Trauma
Vascular trauma refers to a blood vessel, arteries, or vein injuries. Arteries carry blood to an extremity or organ, and veins return blood to the heart. Injuries to vital structures result in bleeding, blood loss, or blockage and cut-off of blood supply. Vascular trauma may result from a blunt injury where the vessel is crushed or stretched or a penetrating injury where the vessel is punctured, torn, or severed. Treatment includes open surgery, which usually involves surgical bypass, minimally invasive endovascular stent graft repair, or embolisation for bleeding. - Vascular Emergencies
Vascular emergencies include traumatic and non-traumatic conditions in which the blood supply to vital organs is cut off or blocked. It also includes conditions where a blood vessel ruptures or bursts, resulting in life-threatening bleeding. It is crucial to maintain the vital blood supply to the various organ system, and therefore a vascular surgeon is required. A vascular emergency can result from a range of conditions that may impair circulation, cause disruption of the blood vessel wall with bleeding, or occlusion of the blood vessel lumen. Dr Moydien can treat vascular emergencies. - Vascular Access
Vascular access procedures refer to the “insertion of a catheter” into the blood vessel or abdomen or the “creation of a fistula graft”, which serves as a lifeline or connection for a patient. These connections to the bloodstream enable a patient to receive medication, nutrition, and dialysis easily. The creation of vascular access is done by Dr Moydien, who has experience in delicate veins and blood vessels and vascular surgery expertise. - Trauma Surgery
Traumatic injuries, both blunt and penetrating, often cause injuries to blood vessels, arteries, and veins. Traumatic vascular injuries can disrupt a vessel with bleeding or a blockage, which results in the lack of blood flow to the extremities and vital organs. These traumatic vascular injuries often require the expertise of a vascular surgeon. Treatment can include open surgery and minimally invasive endovascular procedures.
