ABOUT

Dr Laura Redman is a vascular surgeon who treats vascular diseases, spider and varicose veins as well as deep vein thrombosis.  Sclerotherapy, vein stripping, ablation and endovenous treatment are services the doctor and her team offer. The establishment of Dr Redman’s vein clinic, the Vascular Centre is based on work of the well-renowned Professor Labropoulos.

Dr Redman attained an MBChB and has a Master’s in Medicine. Apart from her published work, she has held presentations in France and Switzerland. The doctor has a particular interest in venous disease, lymphoedema and wound management. Limb 4 Life is a specialised programme that Dr Laura Redman started in 2015. The team at Limb 4 Life help patients recover from limb trauma.

Dr Redman has visited and specialised in various vascular units in the USA, Europe and the UK.

Services includes :

  • Spider veins
Spider veins are red, blue or purple webs that people refer to as “thread lines.” Although spider veins are benign, most people remove them for cosmetic reasons. Spider veins occur when the valves within the veins stop functioning. Blood is transported through the valve which closes to prevent backflow. If the valve becomes damaged, blood will fail to flow adequately and will pool in the vein. The vein starts to enlarge as more and more blood accumulates in it. Not be mistaken for varicose veins, spider veins are much smaller and only form a slight bulge. Dr Redman uses a closure system called “sclerotherapy” to treat spider veins. The vascular surgeon injects a sticky substance into the spider vein to cut it off blood flow.
  • Varicose veins
Varicose veins run deeper than spider veins. Varicose veins are filled with blood and appear as visible lines within the leg. Similar to spider veins, varicose veins have either a blue, purple or red tinge. When veins fail to function properly, blood accumulates. The build-up of blood causes veins to enlarge and protrude from the surface of the skin. People over the age of forty-five and those who are obese are prone to varicose veins. Vein stripping is a traditional approach that's only performed for exceptional cases. Today, there are now more modern minimally invasive techniques that are used to treat varicose veins. Endovenous ablation therapy is a less invasive treatment option. It’s through ablation therapy that Dr Redman uses a combination of radiofrequency waves and heat to stunt the vein.
  • Leg wounds (ulceration)
Venous leg ulcers are sores that can take a few weeks, and in some cases, years to heal. A venous ulcer develops from an open wound on the leg. Veins in the leg transport blood to the heart but dysfunctional valves hinder the flow of blood. Blood backs up into the veins and puts pressure on the limbs. People who have had leg injuries, varicose veins and those who are obese are more susceptible to venous leg ulcers. Sister Paddy Regnart is a qualified nurse who assists with the Vascular Centre’s wound care and management cases.
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot develops within the vein. A blood clot is a gel-like blood that tends to form in thigh and leg veins. A blood clot obstructs the vein and affects blood circulation. Clots form as a result of inactivity, sitting for extended periods and injury. Pain, changes in skin colour and swelling are signs of deep vein thrombosis. DVT is a serious condition that requires immediate surgical intervention. Injectable heparin, in conjunction with warfarin, is used to treat deep vein thrombosis. Dr Redman performs surgery to resolve iliofemoral DVT. Iliofemoral DVT begins in the pelvis and causes inflammation of the calf and thigh. A stent is used to dilate a narrow vein.
  • Pelvic congestion syndrome
Chronic pelvic pain occurs as a result of pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS). Pelvic congestion syndrome occurs when varicose veins develop in the pelvic area. Chronic pain, excessive bleeding, lethargy, back pain, varicose veins near the buttocks and inflammation are signs of PCS. A Duplex Doppler ultrasound is a test that’s conducted to check for pelvic varicose veins. Dr Redman carries out a CT scan or MR Venogram to confirm a diagnosis. Ovarian vein embolisation is a surgical method that's used to treat ovarian veins. The vascular surgeon inserts coils into enlarged pelvic veins to seal them.
  • Arteriovenous malformation
Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) occurs when blood vessels become entangled. AVM affects the flow of oxygen and blood. Symptoms of AVM depend on its location. Bleeding, nausea, memory loss, fatigue, paralysis, back pain, migraines and neurological deficits are general signs of AVM. Surgery to correct arteriovenous malformation requires a multidisciplinary team that consists of vascular surgeons, radiologists and plastic surgeons. Endovascular embolisation is a surgery that the vascular surgeon performs to treat AVM. The vascular surgeon inserts a catheter into the malformation and injects a substance. The substance that’s injected forms a synthetic blood clot and restricts blood flow.
