Dr Jan Heymans is an approachable Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Pretoria, Gauteng. He qualified as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2016 through the Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa at the University of Pretoria.

He has a special interest in providing his patients with comprehensive orthopaedic trauma treatment, reconstructive surgery and lower limb joint replacements, assisting them towards a full recovery and enhanced mobility for a healthier and happier future. He is a post-graduate student in Psychology, which aids him in having a holistic view of the orthopaedic field with immense compassion for his patients.

  • Trauma surgery: This surgery focuses on treatment and care of injuries which are caused by an impact and may be threatening. Dr Heymans performs trauma surgery for a range of fractures, breaks and injuries to the bone and soft tissue. These may occur due to traffic accidents, falls, sports, gunshots, crush injuries or stab wounds. Trauma surgery may include minimally invasive surgery, bone grafting, tissue reconstruction and a complex upper and lower limb reconstruction. The main objective is to restore the health and strength of the bones, as well as maintaining the range of motion.
  • Reconstructive orthopaedic surgery: In cases where bone fractures have healed incorrectly, reconstructive surgery may be recommended. Reconstructive surgery involves the surgical reconstruction of the musculoskeletal system, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and other related structures, caused by sports or physical activity, force trauma or other injuries and complications. Reconstructive orthopaedic surgery is commonly done on the knee, hip, ankle, foot, hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder and other joints to improve mobility and restore functionality. Surgery may include joint replacement, osteotomy, ligament repair and arthroplasty. Depending on your condition, Dr Heymans will determine which reconstructive surgery is best suited for you and will discuss with you what you may expect during recovery.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: This is a hand disease which occurs when there is pressure on the median nerve, which runs from the arm through to the carpal tunnel in hand. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes are the most common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. You may experience symptoms such as numbness and tingling of the fingers, pain in the forearm or shoulder, shock-like sensation on your fingers, or weakness in your hand. These symptoms may develop gradually and progress over time. Carpal tunnel syndrome treatment may include splinting and bracing, steroid injections, anti-inflammatory medications, or nerve gliding exercises. Surgery may be recommended when conservative treatment has been exhausted.
  • De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: This condition affects the tendons in your wrist, causing the sheaths covering the tendons to become inflamed and put pressure on the nearby nerves. De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis symptoms may include pain over the thumb and wrist, especially when making a fist, twisting the wrist or grabbing something. You may also feel a catching sensation when moving your thumb, and your thumb and the side of your wrist may be swollen. Dr Heymans may recommend splints, steroid injections and anti-inflammatory medication to help treat De Quervain Tenosynovitis. He may also advise that you avoid doing any activities that may lead to your thumb or wrist to be swollen. De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis surgery may be recommended as a last resort.
  • Tendon repair: Tendons are band-like tissues which connect muscles to the bone. Tendon repair is recommended when the tendons in your hand are damaged due to a deep cut, sports injury, hand crushing injury, rheumatoid arthritis and a ruptured tendon. A damaged tendon may cause symptoms such as pain, swelling and lack of functionality. Tendon repair involves Dr Heymans using splints to immobilise your hand while your tendon heals. In severe cases, hand tendon surgery may be required to repair the tendon. A tendon transfer may be done simultaneously, where the orthopaedic surgeon may take a piece of tendon from a healthy finger and use it to replace the damaged tendon.
  • Tennis elbow repair: Tennis elbow is a painful condition which occurs when your elbow tendons become overloaded due to an overuse of the wrist and the arm. Ligaments, tendons and muscles are responsible for holding the elbow joint together. Signs and symptoms of tennis elbow include a burning pain on your elbow when shaking a hand, turning a doorknob and holding a coffee cup, and a weak grip due to a damaged tendon. Tennis elbow cure involves the use of anti-inflammatory medications, bracing and steroid injections. In severe cases, Dr Heymans may recommend surgery which involves the removal of the damaged tendon to help relieve pain and improve the elbow’s mobility.
  • Cubital tunnel release: The ulnar nerve travels through the cubital tunnel located in your elbow. When you bend your elbow, the ulnar nerve may stretch and catch on the bony bump which may cause it to become entrapped. This is called cubital tunnel syndrome and may cause symptoms such as severe pain, numbness and a tingling sensation on your pinkie and ring finger. Cubital tunnel syndrome treatment may include a splint which may be used at night to position the elbow. Dr Heymans may recommend cubital tunnel release surgery, which involves the decompression of the ulnar nerve and may be accompanied by the transposition of the nerve.
  • Rotator cuff repair: The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons at the top of the upper arm bone, called the humerus, which connects the arm to the shoulder blade. Rotator cuff repair is a surgical procedure done to repair a torn or injured tendon in the shoulder that resulted in inflammation due to overuse, repetitive stress, or sports injury. When the tendons in the rotator cuff are damaged, whether partially or completely, rotator cuff surgery may be required to remove bone spurs and cartilage, and repair the tendon as well. This procedure helps relieve pain and help improve mobility.
  • Shoulder decompression: This procedure involves the orthopaedic surgeon removing loose fragments, swollen or inflamed bursa and any bone spurs in order to increase the subacromial space located between the shoulder’s ball due to shoulder impingement. Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons rub on the shoulder blade normally when the small, fluid-filled sac, called a bursa, situated in-between the tendon and shoulder blade is inflamed due to arthritis or overuse. A rotator cuff injury may also cause it. Shoulder decompression is recommended in severe cases of shoulder impingement. In some cases, Dr Heymans may treat shoulder impingement with physiotherapy, steroid injections and anti-inflammatory medication.
  • Biceps tenotomy: Biceps muscle in your upper arm, connect to your shoulder through a tendon. When this tendon is torn or injured, it may cause inflammation and severe bicep pain in your shoulder. Biceps tenotomy involves releasing the damaged, inflamed long head of biceps tendon from its attachment to allow it to fall into the upper arm and out of the shoulder joint. Dr Heymans may also reattach the detached tendon to the humerus bone with the use of screws, through a procedure called biceps tenodensis. Repetitive turning motions and weightlifting after a biceps tenotomy may cause spams in the biceps.
  • Hip replacement: This is a procedure done to surgically remove a painful hip joint caused by arthritis and replace it with an artificial joint made of metal or plastic components. Dr Heymans may recommend a hip replacement if you are experiencing severe hip pain and mobility difficulties caused by arthritis, avascular necrosis, or a fracture. This procedure is commonly performed in elderly patients since the hip joint carrying most of the body's weight. It is easily fractured due to the decrease in bone density with age due to medication or conditions that causes osteopenia. It may be performed in younger patients with sports injuries.
  • Arthroscopy: A knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique performed to diagnose and treat conditions or problems in a knee. It is done to explore and get a better look at your inner workings of the knee to find the cause of the pain. It may also be performed as a surgical procedure to treat the problem found during the diagnostic test. This procedure involves Dr Heymans making small puncture-like incisions on your knee and then pump saline solution in your knee to allow him to view it properly. He will then use a thin tube with a camera, called an arthroscope and other surgical tools to diagnose the cause of the pain. He will then treat the problem if there is a meniscus tear, debridement of cartilage and inflammation, misaligned patella, torn ligaments and fractures in your knee.
  • Meniscus repair or meniscectomy: The menisci are disks of cartilage in your knee joint, which is connects your thighbone to your shinbone. They are responsible for keeping your knee stable and acting as shock absorbers. The menisci may be damaged due to sports injuries or a general wear and tear, which may cause pain, inability to straighten your leg and instability in your knee. A meniscus repair is a surgical procedure where Dr Heymans will make a small-puncture incision on the sides of your knee and pass surgical tools through the incisions. He may then repair the tear, remove a piece of the torn meniscus or remove the entire meniscus.
  • Knee replacement: This procedure involves the surgeon removing damaged cartilage and bone, and replace them with prosthetic components made from metal, ceramic, and plastic. Dr Heymans may recommend for people who are experiencing pain and mobility difficulties caused by arthritis, sports injury, dislocation or a fracture. During the procedure, Dr Heymans will make an incision on your knee to access the damaged bone and cartilage, which he will remove. A prosthesis will then be cemented in place, and the kneecap will also be removed and replaced with a patellar component. Dr Heymans will then flex the knee to make sure that it is working properly. He will then stitch close the incision.
  • Ankle arthrodesis: This procedure involves the orthopaedic surgeon fusing ankle bones together so that the ankle doesn't move or bend anymore. This procedure is recommended the last resort to treat severe and debilitating pain which may be caused by ankle arthritis. It may be performed to treat deformities such as cavus foot, club foot or severe ankle instability. During the ankle fusion surgery, Dr Heymans will make small-puncture incisions on your ankle and insert surgical tools in them to remove the surface of the joint. He will then hold the bones together with screws, which then will heal together and fuse to one another.
  • Bunion correction: A bunion is a bony lump which forms at the base of your big toe due to pressure on the toe. This may cause symptoms such as pain when walking or putting on your shoes. Bunion correction surgery involves Dr Heymans removing bunions in order to align with the rest of the foot. During the procedure, the orthopaedic surgeon will make an incision on the bunion and cut it to smaller fragments and removes it. He will then use screws to hold the big toe in place and straight. In cases where the soft tissues of the big toe become too tight, Dr Heymans will then make a small incision on the big toe to relieve pressure and allow the tissues to relax more and stitch the incisions close.
