  • Menopause: This is a phase which marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It’s diagnosed after not having a period for 12 months. Menopause begins when a woman reaches their late 40's or early 50's, which encompasses a range symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, vaginal dryness and slowed metabolism. Depending on your condition, Dr Hartell may prescribe medication to help relieve symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hair thinning and insomnia. In more severe cases, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be recommended to support the body due to the symptoms being a result of decreased levels of oestrogen and progesterone.
  • Contraception: This is a method of preventing pregnancy. Contraceptive methods may include condoms, birth control pills, IUD device, and vaginal ring, etc. During your gynaecology appointment, Dr Hartell will help advise the most suitable contraceptive method according to your individual lifestyle. Throughout a woman's life, their reproductive needs may change, and so will their contraceptive needs. During the puberty stage, the body changes and girls start their menstrual cycles, which may raise a lot of questions from teenagers. Dr Hartell helps teenage girls with teen health issues and adjust to womanhood by educating them about various aspects of the body, such as reproductive health and how to manage several menstruation concerns. The gynaecologist will focus on preventing unplanned pregnancies as well as sexually transmitted diseases or infections (STD/STI) through contraceptive counselling, managing unruly menstruation cycles and any recurrent yeast infections or urinary tract infections.
  • Hysteroscopy: This procedure involves the gynaecologist using a hysteroscope to look inside your uterus to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility issues and if an intrauterine device (IUD) may need to be removed. A hysteroscopy may be done before surgery such as laparoscopy, cervical dilation and womb curettage (D&C). A hysteroscopy may also be used for surgical purposes, such as correcting abnormal conditions like adhesions, polyps and fibroids, or a malformations (defects) of the uterus. This procedure may be done in the hospital under general anaesthesia, or in Dr Hartell’s rooms with a sedative and depending on the type of procedure done. You may be able to go home after the procedure.
  • Cervical cancer screening and colposcopy: These screenings involve looking for cancer or abnormalities which may become cancerous before having any signs and symptoms of cancer. A routine pap smear will be done to screen for any cervical abnormalities, by taking cells samples from your cervix and sending them to the lab. If the results come back and are abnormal, Dr Hartell may perform further diagnostic tests to find the cause. Abnormal pap smear test results are normally investigated with the use of a colposcopy, where the gynaecologist will magnify the cervix, vagina and the vulva and examine the abnormal cells. More samples may be taken for further testing, and depending on the results, Dr Hartell will make a treatment plan suitable for you.
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome: This is a hormonal disorder which is common among women in their reproductive age. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) symptoms may include infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess androgen and enlarged ovaries which may prevent the ovaries from not functioning properly or regularly. Dr Hartell may use a transvaginal ultrasound, a pelvic exam and blood test to diagnose PCOS. To treat PCOS, Dr Claudine Hartell may recommend a combination of birth control pills and progestin therapy to help regulate your menstrual cycle and reduce excessive hair growth. She may prescribe oral anti-estrogen medication, metformin and gonadotropins to help you ovulate.
  • Genital tract infections: These are a range of vaginal infections which may be contracted and may cause genital tract infections symptoms such as vaginal discharge, genital warts, vaginal itching, blisters and sores. There are different types of vaginal gynaecological infections, namely bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, trichomoniasis, genital tract ulcers which may be painful or painless, and vaginal warts. Some sexually transmitted diseases may not cause any symptoms but may be possible to carry the virus and transmit it to others; therefore it's essential that you and your partner test for STI/STD’s or HIV before being intimate. To treat genital tract infections, Dr Hartell may recommend antibiotics for vaginal infections and antiviral drugs for HIV.
