ABOUT
Dr Stevens Setati is a passionate neurosurgeon who specialises in spinal trauma, brain and spinal tumours as well as degenerative diseases. The doctor provides comprehensive care for his patients and works hard to resolve spinal disorders and congenital cranial conditions. Dr Setati works at Steve Biko Hospital a few times during the week to keep abreast of the latest neurological trends and serve his community.
As an accomplished neurosurgeon who practises from his private practice at Life Peglerae Hospital, Dr Setati performs a wide range of intracranial and spinal surgeries. In addition to his medical services, the doctor assists his patients and their attorneys with medico-legal assessments and reports.
Services includes :
- Spinal trauma
A spinal cord injury is severe and arises when there’s damage to the patient’s spinal cord. Because spinal trauma is severe, spinal cord injuries require urgent medical care. Spinal trauma occurs from sudden blows to the patient's spine, falls or as a result of sports injuries. Injuries may also fracture or damage the spine's vertebrae. The build-up of fluid or bleeding around the spinal cord is problematic and requires immediate medical care. A person who suffers from a spinal cord injury shows signs of a headache, neck or back pain or stiffness in his or her neck. Dr Stevens Setati conducts the necessary diagnostic assessments to evaluate the level of spinal trauma and discusses surgical options with his patients and their families. - Spinal tumours
Spinal tumours are abnormal tissue masses that grow within or near the spinal column and spinal cord. Spinal tumours are classified as either benign or malignant. Whether benign or not, these spinal tumours affect the patient's nervous system and press against the spinal nerves. Pressure on the spinal nerves causes pain, numbness, neurological deficits and in other severe cases, paralysis. Spinal tumours amass in the spinal cord nerves, the spinal cord covering or the spinal bone. Dr Stevens Setati’s treatment plan depends on the patient’s symptoms as well as his or her diagnosis. If the patient’s symptoms are minimal or progress slowly, the neurosurgeon will initiate a non-surgical approach. A majority of spinal cancer cases, however, require a multidisciplinary team effort. - Degenerative conditions of the spine
Spinal discs degenerate over time due to “wear and tear” because of the natural process of ageing. Disc degeneration either has no symptoms or causes extreme pain. The level of pain as a result of disc degenerative disease gets worse with age. Disc herniation is one of the reasons for degenerative conditions of the spine. When there's a small hole in the outer layer of the disc, its soft, inner material pushes out of the crack and creates a bulge, or the disc may rupture. Another reason for degenerative conditions of the spine is the loss of intervertebral fluid that occurs because of age. As a person ages, the level of fluid in the disc decreases, and as a result, the disc wears out. - Pain management of spinal conditions
Chronic back pain occurs as a result of degenerative diseases of the spine, spinal arthritis, disc herniation, spinal stenosis or radiculopathy, otherwise referred to as a pinched nerve. Chronic back pain is a severe condition that affects a person's quality of life and causes emotional stress. Dr Setati strives to treat chronic back pain that arises from spinal disorders. The doctor uses epidural steroids, braces, pain medications and physical therapy to reduce spinal pain. Non-invasive therapy forms part of the doctor's treatment as he injects steroids directly into the affected region for long-term pain management. Epidural steroids provide long-term pain relief from conditions that include spinal stenosis, sciatica, muscular spasms and a pinched nerve. Spinal cord stimulation is another non-invasive treatment that directs electric currents to the patient’s spinal cord to relieve pain. - Medico-legal diagnosis and reporting
Brain and spinal injuries that occur as a result of trauma due to sports injuries, falls, or motor vehicle accidents can have devastating emotional, physical and financial consequences. Dr Setati, however, provides medico-legal diagnosis and reporting services of both brain and spinal injuries to make claims. As an accomplished neurosurgeon, Dr Setati diagnoses conditions that affect the central nervous system as well as brain and spinal trauma injuries. The doctor assists in the diagnosis of life-altering injuries, emotional trauma and substantiates for medical bills due to years of medical therapy. It’s through the doctor’s diagnosis that he can formulate medico-legal reports and assessments for the defendant and plaintiff attorneys to claim for damages. - Brain tumours
Brain tumours are abnormal growths within the brain. Because there’s limited space within a person’s skull, the formation of brain tumours within the restricted area can cause serious problems. Whether the brain tumour is benign or cancerous, it can grow and increase intracranial pressure. Meningiomas and gliomas are prevalent brain tumours. A meningioma is a growth that develops over time in the meninges. Although rare, cancerous meningiomas can be aggressive. Gliomas are abnormal growths that arise from sticky glial cells. Gliomas are primary brain tumours that affect the patient’s neurological function and can be life-threatening if it multiplies. Before Dr Setati performs a craniotomy to remove the brain tumour, he assesses the size and rate of progression of the tumour - Brain trauma
Brain trauma arises from an injury to the person’s scalp, skull or brain. A motor vehicle accident, fall or sports injury causes the brain to move around within its cranial vault and as a result nerve fibres of the brain bruise, bleed or rupture. Blunt force trauma to the skull requires immediate surgical intervention. A person who suffers from brain trauma experiences blurred vision, headaches, nausea, confusion or seizures. A hematoma occurs when blood pools on the surface of the brain due to a head injury. Dr Setati performs diagnostic tests to assess the severity of the patient's head injury. The neurosurgeon will have to perform surgery that's referred to as a craniotomy to treat a life-threatening subdural hematoma. Dr Setati performs surgery to reduce intracranial pressure and improve the flow of oxygen to the brain. - Infections of the brain
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and protozoa cause infections of the brain. Certain types of medications, as well as autoimmune diseases, are also the cause of infections of the brain. Fever, migraines, confusion and seizures are all are signs of brain infections. If left untreated, infections of the brain can lead to stroke or brain damage. Meningitis is an infection of the brain that results in inflammation of the meninges, the membranes of the brain. Although a viral infection is the primary cause of meningitis, bacterial and fungal infections can also be the cause of the disease. Encephalitis is another infectious brain disease caused by a virus. Meningoencephalitis is a combination of encephalitis and meningitis. Meningoencephalitis arises from a bacterial, viral or fungal infection and in some cases occurs as a result of an autoimmune disease such as AIDS. - Congenital cranial conditions
Congenital cranial conditions usually occur as a result of brain defects present at birth. Formation of the brain starts from a plate of cells on the upper region of the embryo. Structural abnormalities of the brain occur when the process of brain development during birth is interrupted. Genetic defects are not the only cause of congenital cranial conditions, but infection, drug use and trauma to the foetus during pregnancy are also factors that contribute to these conditions. Dr Setati diagnoses and treats congenital cranial conditions present at birth or later in the patient’s life as symptoms can go unnoticed for some time. - Person-specific supplementation
Because of the mass consumption of processed food, people lack adequate nutrient supply. Longevity Centre stocks world-class medical supplements. Each supplement is infused with ingredients that are formulated to suit the patient's needs. Solgar, Good Health, Metagenics, Future Health, Coyne Healthcare and Medford comprise the Longevity Centre's product range. The centre doesn't randomly suggest a supplement but instead, uses targeted approaches, techniques and tests to determine if the patient requires a specific supplement.
